Why silage

Six numbers every dairy farmer should know.

+1.5–2.5 L

More milk per animal per day vs dry fodder

12+ months

Fodder security — sealed bales stay fresh through summer

30–35%

Dry matter locked at peak energy (milk-line stage)

₹90–100

Extra net income per animal per day at ₹60/L milk

0 hrs

Chopping labour — open the bale, feed, done

pH 3.8–4.2

Stable lactic fermentation cattle love to eat

From the field

Watch how golden silage is made.

Whole-plant maize chopping

A forage harvester chops standing corn at 8–12 mm at the milk-line stage and blows it straight into the trailer — the first step to golden silage.

Sealed bales, stacked to cure

Richnest bale yards at Rajpura and Nabha — thousands of compacted bales sealed in white multi-layer film, the oxygen barrier that makes or breaks fermentation.

Silage corn at milk-line stage

Green, whole-plant maize ready for harvest — 30–35% dry matter, the window our agronomists fix for every partner field.

Step-by-step guides

Start, feed, store, improve.

Guide 01

How to start feeding silage

Rumen microbes need 7–10 days to adapt to fermented feed. Switch too fast and the animal goes off feed; switch right and milk rises within three weeks.

Never start silage on an empty stomach or on a sick animal. Introduce one change at a time.

  1. 1

    Day 1–3 · Taste

Mix 3–5 kg silage into the usual green/dry fodder. Feed after milking when appetite is highest.

  2. 2

    Day 4–7 · Build

Raise to 8–10 kg per adult animal. Reduce dry fodder by the same weight. Keep 50 g mineral mixture and free water.

  3. 3

    Day 8–10 · Full ration

15–25 kg per cow/buffalo depending on body weight and yield, split into two feeds.

  4. 4

    Week 3 · Measure

Record milk daily. Expect +1.5–2.5 L and firmer dung. Adjust concentrate to 1 kg per 2.5 L of milk.

Guide 02

How much to feed — by animal

Silage replaces green fodder, not concentrate. Use these daily quantities as a starting point and fine-tune by body condition and milk records.

Feed in two splits, morning and evening. Remove leftovers within 12 hours in summer — warm silage spoils fast in the manger.

Guide 03

How to store bales the right way

A sealed Richnest bale is good for 12+ months. Nearly every silage complaint we have ever seen traces back to a punctured film or an opened bale left too long.

First in, first out. Chalk the delivery date on every bale and feed the oldest first.

  1. 1

    Site

Shade or a simple tin roof, on a clean, dry, levelled pad. Away from tree roots, thorns and drains.

  2. 2

    Stack

Maximum 3–4 bales high on the flat face. Leave a walkway to inspect all sides.

  3. 3

    Protect

Rodent bait stations around the stack, bird net on top. Inspect film weekly; patch any hole immediately with silage tape.

  4. 4

    Open

Use an opened bale within 3–5 days. Fold the film back over the cut face between feeds.

  5. 5

    Reject

Black, slimy, ammonia-smelling or hot silage is spoiled. Do not feed it — even to dry animals.

Guide 04

Step-up management: from 8 L to 12 L

Silage is the foundation; management multiplies it. Follow this ladder over one lactation and the bulk cooler will show the difference.

Richie, our AI silage expert, can build this ladder for your herd in Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati or English — ask him anything.

  1. 1

Step 1 · Balance the ration

Silage + dry fodder + concentrate + 50 g mineral mixture + 30 g salt, adjusted to yield. Ask us for a free chart.

  2. 2

    Step 2 · Water & comfort

60–80 L clean water per animal per day, shade, dry bedding, fans above 32 °C. Heat stress alone costs 15% of milk.

  3. 3

    Step 3 · Health calendar

Deworm every 4 months, vaccinate FMD/HS/BQ on schedule, dip teats after every milking, test for sub-clinical mastitis monthly.

  4. 4

    Step 4 · Reproduction

Detect heat twice daily, inseminate 12 hours after standing heat, aim for a calf every 13–14 months.

  5. 5

    Step 5 · Records

Milk per animal, feed cost, breeding dates. What you measure improves — and it decides which animals to keep.

Questions, answered honestly

Everything farmers ask us about silage.

01Silage Basics & Science

What exactly is corn silage and why is it better than dry fodder?
Corn silage is the whole maize plant — stalk, leaves and cob — harvested at 30–35% dry matter, chopped to 8–12 mm and fermented in airtight conditions. Dry fodder (bhusa/gusa) is mostly fibre with most nutrients lost; silage retains energy, protein and moisture. Cattle fed silage typically give 1.5–2.5 litres more milk per day and hold yield through summer.
Why is corn the preferred crop for silage?
Maize has the highest energy per acre of any fodder crop, a natural sugar content that drives fast lactic fermentation, and a hollow stem that compacts well. Sorghum, oats and bajra can be ensiled too, but corn gives the most consistent, palatable result — which is why our buyback programme is built around it.
What does good silage look, smell and feel like?
Golden-green to light brown colour, a sweet-sour (lactic/pickle-like) smell, slightly moist but not dripping, and cool to the touch. Reject silage that is black or slimy, smells of ammonia or vinegar, feels hot, or shows white/blue mould.
Does silage have any side effects on cattle?
Properly made silage has none. Problems arise only from spoiled silage (mould, mycotoxins) or too-fast transition (acidosis). Introduce over 7–10 days, feed with dry fodder and minerals, never feed mouldy material, and you will only see the upside.

02Feeding Silage Day to Day

How much silage should I feed per animal per day?
For a 400–450 kg milking cow or buffalo, 18–25 kg per day split across two feeds, alongside 4–6 kg dry fodder and concentrate at roughly 1 kg per 2.5 litres of milk. Dry animals 10–15 kg, heifers 6–10 kg, goats 1–3 kg. Every first order comes with a free ration chart.
Can I feed silage as the only fodder?
Silage can replace all green fodder, but keep 4–6 kg of dry fodder for rumen health and long-fibre chewing, plus concentrate and a mineral mixture. A silage-only diet works only in scientifically balanced total mixed rations.
Will silage change the taste or fat of milk?
No off-taste with good silage. Fat and SNF typically improve because the animal receives steady energy. Feed silage after milking rather than just before to keep the milking area clean and odour-free.
Can silage be fed to calves, goats, bulls or gaushala animals?
Yes. Calves above 3 months (start with 1–2 kg), goats and sheep (1–3 kg), bulls and gaushala adults (12–18 kg). Gaushalas across Gujarat and Punjab run ₹50/animal/day rations built on our bales — see the Knowledge Hub article on gaushala feeding.

03Storage, Shelf Life & Quality

How long do your silage bales last?
Sealed and stored in shade: 12+ months. Once opened, finish a bale within 3–5 days and keep the cut face covered between feeds. Our 25 kg bale is sized so even a two-animal household finishes it in time.
Where should I store bales on my farm?
Shade or a tin roof, on a clean dry pad away from thorns, roots and drains. Stack maximum 3–4 high, keep rodent bait around the stack and bird net on top, inspect film weekly and patch punctures with silage tape immediately.
A bale got punctured in transport — is it spoiled?
Not if you act fast. Tape the hole within 24 hours and use that bale first. Small punctures cause a shallow spoiled patch at the hole which you discard; the rest stays good.
How do you guarantee quality at Richnest?
Every lot is harvested at the agronomist-verified milk-line stage, chopped to 8–12 mm, compacted and sealed in 9-layer film the same day. Batches are checked for dry matter, pH and mould before dispatch, and each bale carries a batch code.

04Buying Silage from Richnest

What does silage cost and what is the minimum order?
Price depends on bale size, quantity and delivery location — our sales team confirms on every order. Minimum 100 bales for scheduled delivery; smaller lots via your nearest partner or dealer.
How fast can you deliver?
Direct routes across Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan, MP and Maharashtra — typically within 3–7 working days of order confirmation. Pan-India shipping via transport partners for bulk orders.
Can I try before committing to a season contract?
Yes. Order a trial lot, feed for 30 days with our ration chart, and measure the bulk cooler. Most farms convert to a monthly schedule after the first month.
How do I order?
Tap any 'Order Silage' button to reach us on WhatsApp with a prefilled message, or submit the contact form with 'Silage / Bales Order'. Our team replies within one working day in Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati or English.

05Entrepreneurship & Buyback Programme

What scale do I need to join the programme?
The programme is built for farmers and FPOs with at least 100 acres — owned or managed. At this scale machinery, logistics and setup achieve cost parity and the economics work strongly in your favour.
Who handles harvesting and baling?
We do — with you. Richnest provides a specialised team trained in silage harvesting and baling operations, working alongside your people so quality is never left to chance in your first seasons.
How does the 100% buyback guarantee work?
Before the season we sign a buyback agreement with quality parameters and a price we fix together — it depends on the prevailing corn price and your state, since labour and other expenses differ statewise. Every bale that passes QC is purchased at that agreed price, collected from your site, with payment on a fixed schedule — and we guarantee a 10–14% return on your season investment.
